Floor markings: how they improve facility operations

Many workplaces across New Jersey could use more floor markings. These can not only improve workflow but also protect employees and raise their awareness of safety procedures. Floor tape in particular is inexpensive and versatile: It can be used on floors, walls, pipes and equipment. The first benefit of floor markings is that they can help identify safety hazards that are specific to the facility.

It's all a matter of improving the facility's visual communication. If employers know that certain areas experience high levels of traffic or frequent reports of worker errors, the markings can help improve safety there. The markings can explain safety procedures and remind workers to, for example, wear personal protective equipment or put tools back in the right place.

Markings that are pre-cut in the shape of footprints or dots can lead workers' and visitors' feet out of danger in those high-traffic areas. Reflective and fluorescent tape can point out hazardous structures like bollards, beams and ramps as well as overlooked components like electrical outlets and control panels. They also complement emergency action plans by highlighting emergency exit routes and doors.

Floor markings come in various materials as well as colors. OSHA has a safety color code, and most recommended color codes for flooring are at least partly based on this.

Without floor markings, workers may be at a higher risk for struck-by injuries, slip-and-fall injuries and much more. Fortunately, an employer's workers' compensation program may pay out for medical expenses, a portion of lost wages and any short- or long-term disability leave that victims need to take. Filing for these benefits might be difficult, though, especially when employers have the right to deny payment, so victims may want a lawyer by their side. As a last resort, the lawyer may prepare an appeal.
