Tips for driving safely on the ice

One of the main hazards of driving in the winter is suddenly encountering in patch of ice. It can happen without warning on roads that previously felt like they had plenty of traction.

So what should you do in that moment, when you find yourself on the ice? Here are a few tips that you can use to stay safe.

Driving on icy roads can be unpredictable, but a few smart precautions can help you stay safe. Reduce your speed, accelerate and brake gently, and keep extra distance between you and other vehicles. If you start to slide, steer in the direction you want to go and avoid sudden movements. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, your headlights are clear, and your vehicle is winter-ready. With patience and careful driving, you can navigate icy conditions more safely.

Don’t hit the brakes

Your instincts may be to press on the brakes and slow down as quickly as you can. But aggressively pushing the brakes on ice just causes you to lose the little grip you have, and you can go out of control.

Take your foot off of the gas

Your instincts about slowing down are correct, however. To do it, just take your foot off of the gas and the engine will naturally slow the car down in a gradual and safe manner.

Be careful when accelerating

Any sudden movement can be problematic on the ice, and that goes for quick acceleration, along with aggressive breaking. Be careful whenever you’re leaving a driveway, going around the corner or coming to an intersection.

Slow down

The very best thing you can do in winter weather is just to drive slowly. Leave the house sooner than you think you need to and give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination. Start slowing down far before a stop sign or a red light, just in case you unexpectedly find yourself driving on the ice. Many winter accidents just happen because people are in a rush.

Unfortunately, even if you drive safely, other drivers may make mistakes and cause accidents on the ice. If so, be sure you know what legal options you have to seek compensation for your injuries.
